My 1st Post!
Hi there, i’m Ollie, I use the handle “Swimace”, “Coolest Geek” and “Ollie” across the internet! I’m excited about this – yes I know… How sad! But I finally got my own personal blog up and running, I had quite a few problems but it was just my lack of personal experience with SQL databases and I worked my way through it. I have written this post to highlight the problems I had along the way so now I can look back and say…
“Oh yeah THAT’S how I did it…”
If I need to run through a re-install again. As you can see I have my own server, it’s hosted on one&one (I since worked out these guys suck) – I uploaded the Wordpress files through Dreamweaver as Mez (a lecturer at Coventry University) showed us:
I now understand why Macromedia Dreamweaver uses the file hierarchy structure it does as it mirrors the site you create on your hard drive as to what it will be online. Thanks for that Mez. Very helpful.
I was going to use an independent FTP upload program, but may look into why I may need to use one of these later on, for now I will use Dreamweaver.
The instructions on the Wordpress “read me” were not very clear to me at 1st as I’m a total n00by to all of this but I have a lot of html, CSS and coding experience although I’ve not really posted any of my projects online, they have just gathered dust in the dark corners of my hard drive. When I uploaded the files via FTP using my FTP settings from one&one I then didn’t know what “username” to use in the wp-config.php file. Eventually I discovered through trial and error and entering a lot of random passwords and usernames I found out I need a MySQL Database…..
Finally it started to come together…. Ok now I have set up my SQL database on my one&one account.
Yet it is still not working?! Ok, so I did some more Google searching and then found this – One&One’s – How do I install Wordpress FAQ.
Ok great all that time I was editing the parts in the config file that where in capitals. So the ‘DB_NAME’ the ‘DB_USER’ and the ‘DB_PASSWORD’ where the bits I was replacing with MySQL database details – Oops…. But I wasn’t to know. Either way it’s all sorted now and gave me the topic for my first post!
Enjoy my blog.
