SMS Plugin

I tried an SMS plugin today so visitors to my blog could text message my mobile phone for free, but I decided not to use it as I was unsure if the provider charged me to receive these messages as It was unclear in the plugins read me file, and also I don’t want to start getting spam text messages to my mobile phone. So this one was short lived.

IM Online

I added my “IM online” status plugin today which replaced and made me remove the Skype badge plugin I had.

I fully removed the “Skype badge” plugin and deleted the files from my server space. The “IM online” plugin was simple to install as it just needed me to copy the files over to the plugins folder in Wordpress and then activate the plugin. After activating the plugin I just needed to drag the plugin over in the automatic sidebar widgets.

After installing this widget I was very happy with the result as I regularly use MSN Messenger and mainly over the newer “Skype” programme, and this widget shows online status for both. The only thing I was not happy with was in the code it had a link to the IM Online plugin site at the bottom of the code and it made the plugin box a bit bigger than it needed to be because of the link it also looked naff, so I removed the following code from the plugin by editing the plugin in my Wordpress dashboard:

< small > Powered by < a href="http://www.mutube.com/projects/wordpress/im-online/?utm_source=plugin&utm_medium=sidebar" >IM Online< / a >< / small >< / p >

Changing it from this:

Mac vs PC

Ok, I am a PC user, and yeah, Microsoft have done a few crappy things in their OS and got a few things wrong but in general they are always going to be the better option in my opinion, down to the fact so many people use them! Ok this may be a bad reason but I know many more people that have seriously high computing skills that use PC’s than I do that have Mac’s. Want a different OS? Why not try Linux, very, very interesting OS, anyway, take a look at the Mac adverts on YouTube.

They have spawned tons of PC responses on YouTube against the Mac ads which in my opinion are way funnier.
The Mac adverts actually symbolize the Mac user and in my opinion and work against Mac, why would you go out of your way trying to create an advert showing how “cool” Macs are and go out of your way to make current Mac users feel good about themselves, and think, “you know what… Yeah I’m cool!” To me that just says LOSER!! hahaha. They are trying so hard to show how cool the Mac is but that’s the whole thing with Mac users, why do they have to show how they are so much more stylish, so different? It’s just a computer after all isn’t it? Anyway… the ads:

PC Response:

A few more funny ones to have a look at but I didn’t embed these, just click on the link to open it up in a new browser window and view it in YouTube:

Mac vs PC – another good one.

I used this video tutorial I found on YouTube to help me create my logo:

After viewing this I was inspired and I think I might create my own video :D

I’m back, you may (or may not) have noticed, but I have been away for the past 3 days, and just after updating my theme?! Why? well, it wasn’t to do with my theme, as I know many people have had theme based problems…

I ended up getting the domain name http://www.ollysblog.com as I found it was available and that I could add it to onto my server package very easily. I am really enjoying blogging and I think I will keep this up after graduating from my university degree. I tried to get the new address up and running but ended up bringing my Wordpress world to an end for a good few days!

Blog Crash... take cover!!!

Here’s why; The problem:

I tried dragging my Wordpress “blog” folder (where my wordpress was installed) over to the root directory of my server…

From http://www.OllyWorthington.com/blog to simply http://www.OllysBlog.com

Oops… It didn’t work and brought my blog down as I have now found out Wordpress is installed to the directory it is put into, as are many sub categories.

I got it working for a while by moving it all back simply by dragging the folder back over via FTP’ing it, but many of the links were broken as were all the images, it was a mess.

The Solution:

I bit the bullet and accepted to go for a full reinstallation. This is why I was down for a while (as Mez noticed) but fear not I’m back up and running now… (thanks for the help Mez! :D )

Bit The Bullet

Before deleting it all via FTP from my server and also clearing my SQL database. I backed up my whole Wordpress by exporting the files via the “export” option on the Wordpress dashboard.

It downloaded all my blog posts to some kind of Microsoft Excel file that I left well alone as I didn’t want to lose any of my blog entries up untill now. After my reinstallation of my Wordpress on my server as well as re creating the new SQL database on my server I imported the file back into my fresh Wordpress installation and… “heypresto!” It worked! Much better than I imagined, it had saved my user details, my blogroll, my links as well as many more useful data entries. The format also thankfully removed all the themes and plugins I decided not to use that were on my server from when I was experimenting with the idea of having my new blog.

Now I know fully what this “blogging” is all about and I have a nice clean, fresh installation with all the plugins I want (so far) up and running. One thing I would recommend to people when they get to this point is to use the export option in your Wordpress to backup your blog. It’s quick easy and a bit of a life saver!

***>>Please note. I still recorded my blogging during my “downtime” via writing and saving entries just in Word and then just pasting them into Wordpress when I got it up and running again.<<***

Right, I have messed about quite a bit with this theme so far, but I now want a fresher, better looking and lighter “Web 2.0 style” theme. I no longer want the dark look anymore so after a good couple of hours of searching I found my perfect theme, and I think I’m going to stick with it:

From the Dark, Dark Ritual 1.0:

And into the light ;) Freshy 1.0:

Today I added many of my friends and university colleagues to my blogroll. I noticed when you click on the link it redirects you from the page you’re on (my page) to the link, I stopped the site redirecting so that you don’t leave my site to visit my links; it just opens another browser window.

To do this you must expand the “Target Tab” by clicking to + and then select this option to open your links from you blog roll into a new window.

I also went through my previously posted links in my blog and added the following HTML code to stop people leaving my blog through my links:
target="_blank">Visit W3Schools!
It’s the target=”_blank” that needs to be added to the standard anchor link.
Learn from the masters here; http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_links.asp.

I’ve also edited my links including a “Blog Design” Category, so if I’ve got or used and reviewed a plugin you like and you want if for your blog it’ll be there.

Logo sketches

I have looked at quite a few logo designs and have also made some sketches within my workbook.

I have looked at some very early designs I had done and am making a comparison with a silhouette design.
